Clinical background

The patient was recovering from a serious brain injury while receiving ongoing medical and rehabilitation care. There was significant right-sided motor impairment and spasticity, particularly affecting the right upper extremity and hand. The affected hand had been tightly clenched and difficult to open.

Acupuncture was incorporated as a supportive part of the patient's broader neurological rehabilitation, with the goal of supporting functional recovery and greater independence in everyday life.

Observed progress during rehabilitation

This account focuses on an approximately two-week period in which six acupuncture treatments were provided alongside ongoing hospital-based neurological rehabilitation. It describes observations from that period—not the patient's entire course of care.

At the beginning of this treatment period, the patient still required a walker. Encouragingly, mobility progressed quickly during the early part of this period: the patient was soon able to attend without the walker and, shortly afterward, was able to walk up and down stairs independently.

During this same treatment and rehabilitation period, the previously tightly clenched hand gradually became easier to open, and right upper-extremity movement and functional ability continued to improve.

These were encouraging functional milestones during a relatively short period of ongoing rehabilitation, with meaningful improvements observed in mobility, upper-limb movement, and hand function.
