Acupuncture for Allergy Symptoms in Vancouver
At Apollo Wellness in Vancouver, acupuncture treatment may be considered for people experiencing allergy-related symptoms such as itching or discomfort following environmental exposure. Treatment is adjusted according to the individual's symptoms and presentation.
Can acupuncture help allergy-related symptoms?
Some people notice itching or other discomfort after environmental exposure, including time in a home with a pet. Apollo Wellness provides acupuncture treatment for allergy-related symptoms of this kind. Treatment is planned around the symptoms that are present, not as a claim that the underlying allergy has been removed.
This page focuses on allergy-related symptoms such as generalized itching. For persistent stuffy nose, see our acupuncture for chronic nasal congestion page.
Clinical experience
The following is an anonymized clinical experience from Apollo Wellness describing one patient's reported course of care.
The patient reported already knowing of sensitivity associated with cats and dogs. After visiting a friend's home where a cat was present, the patient developed significant generalized itching over the body and found it very uncomfortable. The patient reported showering immediately after returning home, but the generalized itching continued.
At that visit, the acupuncture treatment was adjusted according to the patient's newly reported generalized itching symptoms. After the first treatment, the patient reported that the generalized itching was no longer present and that the discomfort had resolved.
The patient did not report that the underlying allergic tendency had disappeared. The patient understood that symptoms could return with further exposure to known triggers, and therefore generally avoids known pet-related allergens.
This is an individual clinical experience. Treatment response can vary according to the individual and the cause of the symptoms.
Avoiding known triggers
If certain environments or pet-related allergens are already known to bring on symptoms, it remains important to avoid or reduce that exposure in daily life. Acupuncture treatment for an episode of itching does not mean future exposure is safe.
Medical assessment and urgent symptoms
Persistent, recurrent, unexplained, or worsening allergy-related symptoms may warrant appropriate medical assessment. Acupuncture treatment and medical follow-up can proceed alongside each other.
If symptoms suggest a serious acute allergic reaction—such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or tongue, faintness, or rapidly worsening systemic symptoms—seek urgent or emergency medical care rather than waiting for an acupuncture appointment.
Gentle acupuncture
Apollo Wellness uses a gentle acupuncture approach and high-quality Japanese-made acupuncture needles as part of our treatment standards. Technique and stimulation can be adjusted according to your sensitivity, comfort, and clinical needs.
Sensations during acupuncture can vary from person to person. If you are nervous about needles or more sensitive to needling, please let your practitioner know.
What happens during your first acupuncture treatment?
At the first visit, the practitioner may review when symptoms started, the pattern of symptoms, possible environmental triggers, previous similar episodes, relevant allergy or medical history, and treatments already used, if known.
Treatment may use commonly selected acupuncture points relevant to the presentation, with appropriate adjustments based on symptoms, individual presentation, and response to treatment.
